Saturday’s colder temperatures certainly did not have an effect on
the amount of spectators or bidding during the Maine Anjou, Chimaine and
Chiangus shows and sales. The bidders and buyers were very willing
to throw their hands in the air to culminate a successful ending of the
breed sales at the 15th Annual Cattlemen’s Classic. Saturday night’s
finale, Supreme Row, was well-attended by cattle enthusiasts from across
the Midwest.
The Champion Maine-Anjou bull, was sold by Wayne or Barb Ohlrichs,
Norfolk, NE, to Morgan Wohlgemuth, of Holdrege, NE for $3,400. Reserve
Champion Maine-Anjou bull, also the high-selling bull, was sold by Matt
Kammerer, Kammerer Livestock of Rapid City, SD, to Wayne Bordewyk, of
Rapid City, SD for $4,400.
The Champion Maine-Anjou heifer was sold by Wayne & Barb Ohlrichs, of
Norfolk, NE, to Bruce Hill, Middle Branch Ranch of Gladwin, MI, for
$6,200. Reserve Champion Maine-Anjou heifer, and also the high-selling
heifer, was sold by Doyle & Lorie DeJong, Destiny Livestock, of Box
Elder, SD for $6,700 to Jerry Adamson, Rocking J Ranch of Cody, NE.
The Champion Chimaine and high-selling bull was sold by Craig Talkington,
Hays, KS, to Bill Sharber, Bow Tie Cattle Co., Konowa, OK/Breinig
Simmentals, Arapahoe, NE, for $8,000. Reserve Champion Chimaine bull was
sold by Derek Harken, Iowa Falls, IA, to Kerry Meyer, Stockton, IA for
$2,800.
The Champion Chimaine and high-selling heifer was sold by Kevin
Kimmerling, K-Kim Cattle Co., Pickrell, NE, to Roger Smoker, Warsaw, IN
for $15,000. Reserve Champion Chimaine heifer was sold by Jerry Sidwell,
Sidwell Hay & Cattle, Gill, CO, to Stuart Gilbertson, Kearney, NE, for
$5,000.
The Champion Chiangus bull was sold by Wayne & Barb Ohlrichs, Norfolk,
NE, to Robert Steinbrink, RLS Farms, Loomis, NE for $4,600. Reserve
Champion Chiangus bull honors went to Neal Branscum, of Nancy, KY, and
sold to Kenneth Laurtisen, Dannebrog, NE, for $3,250. High-selling bull
honors went to Terry & Chad Tonniges, T-T Cattle Co., Gresham, NE, and
sold to Roger Smoker, Warsaw, IN, for $9,000.
The Champion Chiangus heifer, and high-selling heifer, was sold by David
& Jody Foster, Foster Bros. Farms, Lockney, TX, to Terry & Chad Tonniges,
T-T Cattle Co., Gresham, NE, for $8,600. The Reserve Champion Chiangus
heifer was sold by Justin & Jordan Holt, Holt Brothers, Aberdeen, SD, to
Darren Stohlmann, Stohlmann Cattle Co., Weeping Water, NE, for $6,000.
The evening wrapped up with champions representing each of the 14 breeds
of cattle competing for the title of Supreme Heifer and Bull at the 15th
Annual Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. Supreme Heifer honors went to David
& Jody Foster, Foster Bros. Farms, Lockney, TX, and sold to T-T Cattle
Co. of Gresham, NE. The Supreme Bull title went to Nisley/Gana
Shorthorn, Martell, NE, and sold to Nate Kolterman of Seward, NE.
Sunday will feature the Junior Show beginning at 8:00 AM. Approximately
400 youth will vie for honors within their respective breed to allow
them to compete for overall titles. Hats off to all exhibitors and
buyers for helping to showcase the biggest cattle event in Nebraska.

Friday’s record-setting temperatures warmed up
the seats at the breed shows and sales during the 15th Annual Nebraska
Cattlemen’s Classic. The evening was capped off with a
record-setting Pen of Five Sale.
The Champion Limousin bull, also the high-seller, was sold by Craig
Sand, Bohi Land & Cattle of Wellsville, KS, to Tim Krause, Krause
Limousin of Ansley, NE for $4,500. Reserve Champion Limousin bull was
sold by Cash Schilling, Schilling Limousin of Edson, KS, to Jeff and Jim
Richter, Richter Limousin of Kearney, NE for $2,400.
The Champion Limousin heifer was sold by Jim Amos, Amos Limousin, of
Stapleton, NE, to Mark Nutter, Sandhills Limousin of Thedford, NE. for
$1,700. Reserve Champion Limousin heifer was sold by Rob Brawner, Bullis
Creek Ranch, of Wood Lake, NE for $1,550 to Mark Nutter, Sandhills
Limousin of Thedford, NE. High-selling Limousin heifer was sold by Mike
& Connie Crook, Crook Limousin, Rising City, NE, to Michael Cox, Sutton,
NE for $1,900.
The Champion Gelbvieh bull was sold by Tom Murphy, September Farms,
Franklin, NE, to Tim Meinberg, Seward, NE for $2,800. Reserve Champion
Gelbvieh bull was sold by Wesley Brown, Nine Bar Nine Gelbvieh, Meriden,
WY, to Ryan Bush, Inavale, NE for $2,400.
The Champion National Balancer bull was sold by Scott Munger, Eagle Pass
Ranch, Highmore, SD, to Dave Palmer, Mina, SD, for $4,000. The Reserve
Champion National Balancer bull was sold by Adam Verner, Verner Farms,
Crookston, MN, to Dr. Robert Wagner, Stone Mountain, GA, for $2,600. The
high-selling honor for the National Balancer bull went to J J Boehler,
Boehler Gelbviehs, Orleans, NE, and sold to Gabe Brown, Dickenson, ND,
for $6,500.
The Champion Gelbvieh heifer, also the high-seller, was sold by Eric
Martin, Golden Image Cattle, of Ford, KS, to Roger Overmiller, Smith
Center, KS for $2,000. Reserve Champion Gelbvieh heifer honors went to
Josh Faimon, Hilltop Gelbvieh, of Lawrence, NE, and sold to Tim Meinberg,
Seward, NE for $1,650.
The Champion National Balancer heifer was sold by J J Boehler/Nick
Wells, Colby, KS, to B & W Cattle of Orleans, NE, for $3,000. The
Reserve Champion National Balancer heifer was sold by Steve Munger,
Eagle Pass Ranch, Highmore, SD, to Jumping Cow, Ramah, CO, for $2,500.
High-selling National Balancer heifer honors went to Adam Verner, Verner
Farms, Crookston, MN, to Jumping Cow, Ramah, CO, for $5,400.
The Champion Shorthorn bull was sold by Nisley/Gana Shorthorn, Martell,
NE to Nate Kolterman, of Seward, NE, for $2,500. The Reserve Champion
Shorthorn bull was sold by Ron Schroeder, Triple S Cattle, Beatrice, NE,
to Wayne McKee, Indianola, IA, for $5,700. The high-selling bull was
sold by Ward Bakenhus, Bakenhus Shorthorns, Columbus, NE, to Marlin
Korthaus, Moulton, IA, for $6,000.
The Champion Shorthorn heifer, also the high-seller, was sold by Nisley/Gana
Shorthorn, Martell, NE to Nels Johnson, Edgar, NE, for $3,500. The
Reserve Shorthorn heifer was sold by Ward Bakenhus, Bakenhus Shorthorns,
Columbus, NE, to Nicholas Murdoch, Nehawka, NE, for $1,700.
The sales continued to heat up the Pen of Five Sale established a new
record. This sale drew a standing room-only crowd of cattlemen that
sorted 25 pens that averaged $8,335 per pen. The 2006 Pen Sale set the
mark for an all-time high-selling pen sold by John Anderson, Willow
Creek Cattle Co., Plainview, NE, and was sold to Catherine Hervert,
Ravenna, NE, for $18,000.
Thursday was a tantalizing day at the 15th Annual
Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. As crowds gathered thoughout the day’s
festivities, the sales continued to be phenomenal.
The Champion Angus bull, also the high-seller, was
sold by Charles & Linda Pohlman, Pohlman Angus of Norfolk, NE. to Mick
Jameson of Minden, NE for $8,000. Reserve Champion Angus Bull was also
sold by Charles & Linda Pohlman of Norfolk, NE. to Charles Houtby of
Wolbach, NE for $5,000.
The Champion Angus heifer and high-selling heifer
was sold by Scott and Jennifer Svoboda, Sand Dunes Cattle Co. of Sargent,
NE. to Alan Forster, Forster Farms of Smithfield, NE. for $7,600.
Reserve Champion Angus heifer was sold by Arlen & Becky Sawyer, A & B
Cattle of Bassett, NE for $5,100 to Troy Alexander, Pawnee, IL.
The Champion Simmental bull was sold by Larry &
Diane Koepke, Arrow K Farms, Hoskins, NE to Kent Nielsen, Nielsen
Simmentals, Campbell, NE for $2,800. Reserve Champion Simmental bull
was sold by Alexander Land & Cattle, Pawnee, IL on order to Handel
Marketing, Rapid City, SD for $1,900. The high-selling bull honors was
shared by Felt Farms, Wakefield, NE, and Suver Simmentals, Arlington, NE
topping out at $3,000.
The Champion Simmental heifer was sold by Gene
Slama, Slama Simmentals, of Dorchester, NE, to Grindstone Creek Farms,
Columbia, MO for $16,500. This heifer also is the highest selling
female, thus far, for the first two days of the Classic sales. Reserve
Champion Simmental heifer honors went to Alan Forster, Forster Farms of
Smithfield, NE, and sold to Ken Hachmeister, Natoma, KS for $2,500.
The Champion Braunvieh bull was sold by Kendall
Schlake, Rock Creek Braunvieh, Fairbury, NE to Kirk Hansen, of Utica, NE
for $2,500. The Reserve Champion Braunvieh and high-selling bull was
sold by Dave Doeschot, Pella Farms, Adams, NE, to Blaine Richards,
Grafton, NE for $3,400.
The Champion Braunvieh heifer was sold by Dean
Thernes, DeWitt, NE to Russell Freeman, Rush, CO, for $1,450. The
Reserve Braunvieh heifer was sold by Dave Doeschot, Pella Farms, Adams,
NE, to Tommy Clarke of Indiana. The high-selling heifer was sold by
Jeff or Darcy Zimmerman, Big Blue Braunvieh, Pickrell, NE, to Chance
Clement, Skidmond, MO, for $2,000.
The Champion Charolais bull was sold by Lee Benes,
Benes Cattle Co., Valparaiso, NE, and sold to Eric Dennis, St. Joseph,
TX for $4,600. The Reserve Champion Charolais bull and high-selling
bull was sold by Dave & Ben Schnuelle, Schnuelle Charolais, Jansen, NE
to Jeff Wulf, Guide Rock, NE, for $4,800.
The Champion Charolais heifer was sold by Roseann
Wilson, West Fork Ranch, Loup City, NE to Mervin Zysset, Farnam, NE, for
$3,000. The Reserve Champion heifer was sold Ted Morgan, Greeley, CO, to
Andrea Morris, Sharon, OK, for $3,600. The high-selling female was a
bred cow sold by Dale Funk, Funk Charolais, Omaha, NE, to Jim Oltman,
Nelson, NE, for $3,800.
The evening excitement climaxed as the 1st Annual
Royal Ice Sale established its own records. This sale drew a standing
room-only crowd of cattlemen that evaluated and purchased embryos,
preganancies, flushes and semen. The sale consisted of 36 lots of elite
genetics averaging $2,215.
Wednesday at the 15th Annual Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic was
extraordinary. Numbers soared from all directions as the sales paved the
way for what looks to be a record breaking Classic.
The champion Hereford Bull consigned by Ashley Steckel of Taylor, NE.
was sold to Cedar Top Ranch, from Stapleton, NE. for $5,000. The reserve
champion Hereford Bull was consigned by Kevin Jensen of Courtland, KS.
and sold to Cedar Top Ranch, from Stapleton, NE. for $3,500. The high
selling bull was consigned by Jay & Cindy Brown from Junction City, KS.
and sold to Tim Wake from Burwell, NE. for $7,500.
The champion Hereford Heifer was consigned by Kyle Rutt of Campbell, NE.
and was sold to Cooper Hereford Ranch from Willow Creek, MT. for $2,750.
The reserve champion Hereford Heifer was consigned by Hogan/Tuell Show
Cattle from Sutherland, NE. and was sold to Roger Wiedel from Hebron,
NE. for $3,600 which was the high selling heifer of the sale.
The champion Polled Hereford Bull consigned by Don Yoesel of Falls City,
NE. was sold for $2.500 to Gress Polled Herefords of Nebraska City, NE.
The reserve champion Polled Hereford Bull was consigned by Lee Dana of
Red Cloud, NE. and sold to Helms Polled Herefords from Holbrook, NE. for
$2,500. The High Selling Male was consigned by Randy Helms from
Holbrook, NE. sold for $3,800 to Mark Largent of Kaycee, WY.
The champion and high selling Polled Hereford Heifer was consigned by
Ron and Allen Schutte of Guide Rock, NE. and sold for $6,000 to Cynthia
Farley of Alcester, SD. The reserve champion Polled Hereford Heifer was
consigned by Russ Tegtmeier of Burchard, NE. and sold to Dick St. Clair
of Jefferson, IA. for $3,100.
The champion Red Angus Bull consigned by Ryan Sellman and White Cattle
Company of Crawford, NE was sold for $9,600 to Cedar Top Ranch, of
Stapleton, NE and Ravishing Reds from North Platte, NE. The reserve
champion Red Angus Bull was consigned by Meado-West Farms Menomonie, WI
and sold to Fowler Farms of Arcadia, NE. for $4,000.
The champion Red Angus Heifer consigned by Greg Sonderup of Genoa, NE.
was sold to Leslie Ehnis of Falcon, MO. for $4,400. The reserve champion
Red Angus Heifer was consigned by Michael and Kathleen Jackson of
Ravenna, NE. and sold to Michal Musin of Ravenna, NE. for $2,800.
Wednesday was a whirl wind of activity but look out for a packed
schedule of events that are slated for Thursday at the Nebraska
Cattlemen’s Classic. The day will kick off with the Angus, Simmental,
Braunvieh, and Charolais show and sales. Good Samaritan Hospital will
have the AirCare Helicopter on display from noon to 2:00 p.m.
You won’t want to miss the frost at the 1st Annual Royal Ice sale
Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. The evening’s festivities include a prime
rib dinner served by Whiskey Creek Steakhouse, Consignor Branding, and
Barn Party.

Boots, buckles, and spurs crowded the 15th annual Nebraska Cattlemen’s
Classic. With a standing room only crowd, temperatures heated up as the
days events unfolded. People united to what was a record breaking event.
The morning started with the second annual Working Dog Trials. The five
highly trained dogs, with their handlers, exhibited their ability to
herd cattle. The Champion and Reserve Champion working dogs were awarded
to Bryan Rice from Morrill, NE. The champion dog sold for $3,200 to Rob
Brawner, of Wood Lake, NE and the reserve sold for $3,600 to Dean Fieser
of Plains, KS.
Later in the day electricity filled the air as the Ranch Horse
Competition got under way. An outstanding slate of working horses
showcased their talents for an eager packed house in the arena at the
Nebraska Cattleman’s Classic. The Classic was honored to have Craig
Haythorne of Arthur, NE and Dave Hebbert of Hyannis, NE, evaluating the
Classic lineup. The horse competition featured a power packed set of 26
premier horses. The Champion Horse consigned by A & B Cattle from
Bassett, NE. The horse sold for $5,800 to Casey Seagren of Welfleet, NE.
The Reserve Champion Horse consigned by Speared Heart Promance Horses
from Holdrege, NE sold for $5,300 to Mike Wells of Hudson, CO.
Wednesdays events will feature the Hereford, Polled Hereford, and Red
Angus show and sales. Bill Conley, of Clarksdale, MO. will judge nearly
120 head of bulls and heifers.
Stop by the 15th Annual Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic to see more than
cattle show and sales. The Classic features nearly 200 commercial
displays for the public to view. Good Samaritan Hospital’s display will
feature the Nebraska Joint Replacement Center so stop by and visit with
a certified physician’s assistant.
The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic will continue through Sunday, February
